Finding an architect is easy. All you have to do is use a search engine on the Internet for an architect in your area or pick up a phone book. The hard part is figuring out which architect is the right one for you because architecture involves both the technical side of the project and the creative part.
There are several things you can do that will help you make sure that you are getting the creative part right, and that you are hiring someone who artistically and creatively is in tune with you.
First, you can drive around or walk around the neighbourhoods in your area, look at homes and notice the ones that you like. After you do that, you can simply knock on doors, talk to people, find out who built their home and get the phone number of the website for their architect. If no one is at home, you can leave a letter asking the homeowners to call you and tell you the names of the professionals that worked on their homes.
This approach may seem a bit intrusive, but in reality, most people would be really happy if you tell them that you really like their home and would like to talk to the people that helped build it.
If you have a lot of friends or acquaintances that live in custom homes, you could talk to them about their experiences and get referrals from them.
Finally, you can spend some time on the Internet and look at the websites of architects. Most of them will have portfolios on their websites that will allow you to determine whether you like the style and approach of a particular architect or not. Most countries have professional organisations of architects and you can use them to get a list of architects in your area. In the UK, this organisation is the Royal Institute of British Architects.
